GlobalFoundries factory processing 300-mm wafer was perhaps the only company in the USA built over the past more than 10 years.
Some time ago, College of CNSE (College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering) and several financial institutions Valley Mohawk (Mohawk Valley) developed a business plan to create in their area , New York - a complex of three factory each capable of processing 450 mm wafers. The maximum cost of the project could reach $ 45 billion, money that is supposed to look in the pockets of private investors and government funds . Such a sum is large even for America.
According to the submitted business plan, the production cluster of three factory with three clean rooms for 450,000 square feet each will be able to employ about 5,000 people directly and about the state of 15,000 people, tied to the maintenance of the infrastructure of the complex. Participation in the project CNSE college gives it special weight. Earlier CNSE joined the consortium Global 450 Consortium (G450C) to develop standards for the development of production equipment and standards required for the production of semiconductors on 450-mm wafers. Moreover, CNSE will have an experienced shop for running prototype 450-mm equipment. In other words, they know what they are talking about.
