POSTER: computer news   ||   SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 UNDERVOLTING OVERCLOCKING AND BATTERY LIFE REVIEW

DATE:2012-07-30

Today when smart phone entered our daily life  , battery life is more and more important . Lower technical process , larger battery , more efficient screen etc... are injected in each new smart phone model but currently even high end device will barely hold one heavy use day  . Off course battery capacity still enough for hours of video streaming or over 10 hours of audio , but for some users this is insufficient .Recently we wrote a review about cheap 4800 MAH battery for Samsung galaxy S3 smart phone for those looking to more battery room, but the result was poor (very expected from low quality Chinese product ) .

Now let us pass to the theme of our today review , For each smart phone there are few modded ROM available (Check http://forum.xda-developers.com for more info) , some users try to squeeze out the last drop from their smart phone , for this reason they use modded ROM , kernel , modem etc ... Those modification usually enhance or fix current ROM with new unlocked feature , add-on , overclocking , better launchers etc .

We will concentrate this time on undervolting and overclocking smart phone processor and their impact on battery life and temperature .

In our test we took the smartphone Samsung galaxy S3 , it is powered by the most powerful up to date processor : Quad-core 1.5GHz, Exynos chip , Exynos 4 Quad is built on Samsung's 32nm HKMG process and consists of 4 ARM Cortex A9s running at up to 1.4 GHz (1.288 v) , Samsung reports 20% lower power with Exynos 4 Quad over Exynos 4 Dual (4210) , the good news is the support of per core frequency and voltage scaling .This is an interesting move away from the one frequency plane shared across all cores architecture of Exynos 4210, and to the aSMP (asynchronous SMP) architecture similar to what Qualcomm has so far exclusively used . Now in the integrated graphic part we have Mali-400MP , which is based on quad core , basically it is the same as in Galaxy S2 but in S3 it is running @ 400 Mhz (Vs 270 Mhz in S2) .

This was the hardware part , let's pass to the software , this time we deal with SiyahKernel , this is currently one the most advanced kernel available for galaxy S3 with the ability of over/undervolting and over/underclocking , now without going on technical detail about this great kernel , lets pass to the test itself .

We tested the galaxy S3 with :

  • Default : Stock setting , all voltage stock for CPU/GPU . 1400 MHz .
  • Stock 1400 MHz  but Cpu undervolted -50 mv, GPU Stock
  • Stock 1400 MHz  Cpu undervolted -100 mv, GPU Stock
  • Stock 1400 MHz  Cpu undervolted -100 mv Gpu Undervolted -50 mv
  • OC 1600 MHz all voltage stock for CPU/GPU
  • OC 1600 MHz Cpu undervolted -50 mv, GPU Stock
  • OC 1600 MHz Cpu undervolted -100 mv, GPU Stock
  • OC 1600 MHz Cpu undervolted -100 mv Gpu Undervolted -50 mv
  • UC 1200 Mhz All voltage stock for CPU/GPU
  • UC 1100 Mhz All voltage stock for CPU/GPU

Those should be enough to have a clear idea on the impact of Frequency / voltage on the smart phone battery life.

Note : For this test we had 2 x Galaxy S3 both without problem overclocked to 1600 MHz . and both worked stably undervolted at -100 mv .This can be just a matter of luck but according to some statistic almost all phone should overclock at least to 1600 MHz (some may require voltage boost) and most also can undervolt by at least -50 mv .

The test itself was simple , we loaded the smart phone with 2 burn-in test , first was fast discharge (Cpu load only) the second was stability test v2.5 (CPU + GPU load). We have also used multimeter for exact battery drain and Quadrant benchmark test . Each time the smart phone was recharged full then loaded with stress test for 2 hours , we monitored the battery drain level , All other application on the phone were disabled to reduce error margin , the screen brightness set manually to minimum and room temp was kept at 25 c during all the test .Average load observed was usually in 22-26 , which good enough and mean that the system is heavily loaded .

  1. The OS used is Android 4.0.4 :
  2. Rom version : Omega v10
  3. SiyahKernel 1.3.9c

Battery usage after 120 min of heavy load :

The highest battery drain was for the overclocked CPU to 1600 MHz with stock voltage , which is quite expected result , high frequency with (high) voltage was never good in efficiency . The lowest was for Stock CPU but undervolted -100 mv (and -50mv GPU) and the CPU at stock 1400 MHz . Good news , we have almost the same power consumption for a processor running at 1600 MHz (undervolted) and same CPU but running at only 1000 MHz , the power deference is 600 x 4 (quad core) = 2400 MHz or 60% more speed for same power consumption. The overclocked processor to 1600 MHz but undervolted show also decent result being even more efficient than stock CPU , this is very interesting result , it turn out that running the processor overclocked to 1600 MHz (but undervolted) is even better (In term of power consumption / battery life) than running the same processor at factory setting , we had about 85 % vs 93% battery life , This was a completely unexpected result . We will do more test with more undervolting but this spot is reserved for next review :-) .

Max battery temperature :

While the Cpu/Gpu were running heavy burn in test it is a good idea to keep eyes on the battery temp , which  some how express the overall smart phone temperature . The formula is clear more voltage = more heat , this was always the rule . The highest temp observed in the test was for the overclocked processor at 1600 MHz , lowest for underclocked processor 48.5 c.

At the same frequency the battery is cooler by about 1-2c with each reduced 50mv from the GPU or CPU, there is also about 1-2 c additional heat  for each 200 MHz in frequency .

So undervolting will not only give higher frequency with less power consumption but also lower smart phone temp , the 1600 MHz overclocked (underclocked) model is almost 5c cooler than the stock version (1400 MHz).

Quadrant Benchmark Score :

Overclocking was always for enthusiast whom want max performance of course this at the expense of lower battery life , each additional 200 MHz will eat 5 min from your battery .

Now each according to his need can fine tune the smart phone performance .
