LCDs are typically made rectangular because the perimeter of the control electronics is located.   Sharp has found a way to distribute all necessary control components on the surface of the screen, which enables to produce LCD panels almost of any arbitrary shape with a minimum thickness of the frame.  For example, Sharp showed a prototype automotive information panel with curved cutouts: The display has an active layer of an oxide of indium, gallium and zinc (IGZO), it provides a low power consumption panel with quality color reproduction and wide viewing angles.  Sharp is finishing testing technology and promises to start production of curly screens in the near future.  The main application areas of these displays will be the automotive industry and wearable devices.
