It seems that the Mozilla Foundation wants to finally give up on the development mail, chat and news client Thunderbird. This follows the letter of the Chairman Mitchell Baker.
According to Mozilla, if the program get rid of dependence on the development of Mozilla systems and, in certain cases its technologies, it will allow Thunderbird to reach a new level.
At the same time it is unclear whether the company will open the source code of the program or the program will be fully transferred to the business partner.
Recall that the email program Thunderbird appeared in 2004 and has been quite successful, but its market share has decreased after the mass transition to mobile client users and web applications. Strictly speaking, the same situation is observed with other mail programs.
Importantly, Thunderbird, like Firefox, allows to modify and extend the functionality of the program due to the plug-in, customize it, and a whole adapt to fit your needs. Competing programs often can not offer such a variety of options, but also supports plug-ins and extensions.
