Linus Torvalds has introduced an updated Linux kernel to version 4.4. The new version includes about 13 thousand patches from more than a thousand developers. New features of this version relate to the system IO, networking and memory.  In addition, the implementation of many new opportunities to work with the equipment. In particular, the specification is implemented LightNVM, extending the driver NVM support for SSD-drives, allowing low-level direct access to the physical device. In turn, it was added to the virtualization capabilities to reduce the memory overhead. For example, in the driver VMware balloon appeared a technology that allows to avoid duplication of identical memory areas in different virtual environments, added the ability to manipulate the memory page size of 2 MB, which significantly reduces the overhead of the hypervisor and the guest operating system when performing the binding and separation of shared memory.
