This year, Apple will release its first iPhone with an OLED display. But the so-called iPhone 8 or iPhone X, contrary to expectations, will receive a flat, rather than a curved OLED-display.
Analyst Wayne Lam said that the iPhone 8 will be equipped with a flat OLED-display, covered with a curved on the edges of the glass with the effect of 2.5D. He also hinted that Apple will change the aspect ratio of the iPhone 8, which will fully enjoy the benefits of a large display. Apple allegedly will follow the example of the South Korean company LG, which in late February released the flagship G6 with an unusual 18: 9 aspect ratio for smartphones. Recall, now all the iPhone are equipped
with displays with a 16: 9 aspect ratio. The analyst noted that LG G6 received a large display, while remaining compact and convenient.
A display expert DisplayMate CEO and Raymond Soneira said that flat OLED displays with a glass counterfeit are much cheaper than curved OLED panels using a flexible plastic backing. In addition, they are easier to manufacture and, accordingly, are available in larger volumes than curved displays.
"The current iPhone 7 has a flat LCD display covered with 2.5D-glass and Apple can make a similar 2.5D OLED display for the iPhone 8 using a glass substrate at a lower price and with much higher production volumes," said Raymond Soneira.
He added that OLED displays have a number of significant advantages over the LCD. In particular, they are thinner, lighter, more energy efficient, have a short response time, wide viewing angles, high brightness and provide accurate color reproduction.
