Until November last year, the Chinese Internet giant Baidu used BMW cars to create prototypes capable of moving independently along the streets of the Chinese capital. Authors of such experiments, however, admitted that the most accurate digital maps of the area are still an integral part of the programs for automatic control of cars. Cooperation with BMW was decided to stop because of some disagreements about the ways of further development of the relevant technologies.
According to Reuters , in July this year Baidu intends to expand the trials of robocar , but so far only in the closed territories, although by 2020 this technology will be available for use on highways and city streets. The program for developing the "autopilot" in Baidu was called Apollo in honor of the corresponding American program of expeditions to the moon. The Chinese Internet giant is ready to cooperate with manufacturers of cars, auto components and profile sensors.
Baidu is actively developing associated initiatives. Founded in October, the fund, which has $ 200 million, will finance development in the field of artificial intelligence, learning systems and augmented reality. Another $ 3 billion Baidu is ready to allocate for the support of young companies engaged in profile development. In January, the operating director of Baidu was appointed a native of Microsoft.
