The well-known overclocker Der8auer (Roman Khartung ) has faced a problem of poor quality of motherboard on the Intel X299 chipset. Motherboards Manufacturers neglected to design VRM-circuits for processors and solutions for removing heat from them.
In the process of selecting individual processor instances, the enthusiast found that the VRM of all available motherboards on the Intel X299 quickly overheat even on relatively small loads . So, one of the models of Intel processors, previously confidently overclocked to 5 GHz, in the new boards could not overcome the boundary at 4.6 GHz. The radiators of the VRM elements warmed up to 84 degrees Celsius, and the board under them heated to a temperature of over 105 degrees.
Overheating was detected in all tested boards with a LGA 2066 connector, which included Gigabyte AORUS X299 Gaming 3 and ASUS Prime X299-A. Another unpleasant moment was a strong warm-up to 65 degrees - power cables connected via a single 8-pin connector. Without a second connector that separates the load, the thermal insulation of the cable insulation is possible. However, the manufacturer's representative commented on this statement by the fact that the problem can be with a specific performance of the cable and connector (used SuperFlower BP with "crystal" connectors).
If developers give the motherboard time, Der8auer sums it up , decent motherboards with modified power systems will appear on the market, in which Intel processors will be able to conquer new performance heights.
