From Intel's quarterly report "funny pictures" you can name only a few slides of the presentation, although we already spoke about the main problems of the processor giant: the corporation is too much dependent on the PC market, which for the last four years has shrunk by more than 15% in its capacity. The head of the company named the priority directions of development for the remaining time of the year programmable FPGA matrixes and memory, which Intel produces jointly with Micron. Revenues from the implementation of NAND chips in the second quarter increased by 58% in annual comparison, and reached record values. In addition, operating income increased by 51%, but this still did not save Intel from declaring a net loss in this line of business. The launch of the factory in Dalian China and the increase in the volume of 3D XPoint production require high costs.
Intel has already shipped to customers more than 200,000 solid-state drives of the Optane family that use 3D XPoint memory. In the data center segment, these drives are currently being tested by more than 50 customers who are ready to start purchasing before the end of the year. But DIMM modules based on 3D XPoint memory will be available only next year, as promised earlier.
The enterprise in Dalian is confidently preparing to begin serial production of memory type 3D XPoint. In the second half of this year, Intel expects to increase the volume of solid-state memory by 20 percent, and the Chinese factory will partially contribute to this. It outstrips the schedule both in output volumes and in the yield level of the products. The cost of producing a unit of production also decreases faster than expected. Next year, Intel will continue to actively transfer its memory to the use of 3D XPoint technology, because it considers it to be one of the most important products for competitiveness.
