Industry sources shared with the resource two main versions explaining the shortage of video cards in this series: the complexity of the process of packaging the HBM2 memory chips on a common silicon bridge with a graphics processor, and some other problems with the packaging of graphics processors by ASE, which in this case is the contractor for AMD. According to the Taiwanese publication, the release of GPU Vega 10 for 14-nm technology is engaged in GlobalFoundries, and memory chips type HBM2 are supplied by Samsung and SK Hynix. As a contractor engaged in packaging these components in a common building, only ASE is mentioned, although the supporters of the theory of "multiple versions of cases" are convinced that the difference in the performance of housings is caused by the peculiarities of the technological process for different contractors.
The source claims that the deficit of Vega GPUs is unlikely to be defeated until October this year. In this situation, they add, NVIDIA is not in a hurry to bring to the market graphics solutions Volta, designed for the gaming segment. The latter will now appear no earlier than the first quarter of next year.
