Rambus has long chosen a model of existence as a patent troll: the company prefers to be at factories producing memory chips, and a staff of experienced lawyers in the courts seeking compensation for all kinds of intellectual property violations. This activity, as it turns out, does not guarantee the well-being: Rambus lost a number of important processes for themselves, which resulted in a reduction of personnel by 15% for budget savings.
Another setback for Rambus almost turned into a case against SK Hynix, which was considered by the District Court of San Jose. The cause of action was the refusal of South Korean license agreement on Rambus terms, called unreasonable and discriminatory. Court required the plaintiff's documents, some of which Rambus safely destroyed.
Upon further investigation it was found out that the requested documents were eliminated unintentionally and Rambus still has the right to compensation from SK Hynix, who was accused of violating patents owned by the plaintiff.
