Intel is struggling to convince potential customers that its server processors Skylake-SP are better than competing AMD EPYC. On the contrary, AMD representatives have repeatedly noted that the high-speed interface Infinity Fabric allows to fully reveal the advantages of "small crystals", which are more profitable in production.
Experts Rosenblatt Securities are convinced that the "monolithic" crystal of Intel Skylake-SP with an area of 680 sq. Mm provides a yield level of not more than 60% with the most favorable outcome, and the more likely value of this indicator is hardly likely to reach up to 50%. AMD processors of the Naples family (EPYC) combine on one substrate four crystals with the area of ??200 sq. Mm, and for them the yield level of the finished product is close to 85-90%.
Thus, with an equal performance level , 28-core Intel Xeon and 32-core AMD EPYC provide savings not only to the buyer (almost twofold), but also to the manufacturer - by some estimates, AMD products are 30-50% cheaper in costs. According to experts, AMD has every chance to increase its share in the server market to decent values. In the same 2006, it reached 24%. Intel will have an advantage over the market share, but it will not be as overwhelming as it is now.
