AMD launched a new series of chipsets AMD 990FX, however, due to the lack of processors, the expansion of motherboards based on this chipset may take several months.
Associate tested the motherboard Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD7 in conjunction with an unnamed processor clocked at 3.2 GHz. They used the technology Turbo Core, which allow to overclock the processor to 3.7 GHz, for some of the tests used by the processor Phenom II. As memory was chosen Kingston DDR3-2000. In the performance tests SLI video card Asus GeForce GTX 580 graphics accelerator as second reference was used. The whole system is powered by Enermax 1250W PSU and running the operating system, Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, installed on the SSD SSD OCZ Revodrive.
The main feature of the new chipset is the support for NVIDIA SLI configurations. To compare the SLI performance they used the motherboard Gigabyte X58A-OC in conjunction with the processor Intel Core i7-990X, overclocked to 4 GHz. In both cases, used the beta driver 275.36, which actually allow to achieve a performance boost in games with SLI regime. Each of the graphics card had 16 lines PCI Express.
Measurements were made in popular games with 2560 x 1600 resolution with FSAA and anisotropic filtering. Intel platform in all cases shows a slight advantage over AMD.
Also associate tested four cards, but the results of these tests, for whatever reason, have not been published. The author note that AMD platform shows a decent performance and it is not inferior to Intel.
The second interesting point is the performance of USB-controller and SATA interface. These two parameters were a problem in previous AMD platforms, in particular, has suffered SSDs performance due to a malfunction with TRIM. Performance was measured using the controllers drive Intel SSD drive, and Kingston with interface USB 3.0. During testing, - most platforms have difficulty with the number of free lines PCI Express, which ultimately affects the performance of the periphery.
In the end, the winner was Etrontech controller, used on motherboard based on chipset Intel X58 Express, with the result of 211/66 MB / s for read and write, respectively. The results for AMD 990FX was 191/54 MB / s".
But in the test SATA 3 Gb / s revealed some problems of the south bridge SB950, related to the bandwidth of read operations. So, AMD shows the result of 224 MB / s read and 78 MB / s for writing. The worst result of the Intel platform in this test, which belongs to the motherboard MSI P67 Marshall, was 262/82 MB / sec.
The main advantage of AMD platform is the low price in comparison with competitors.
