We wrote about AMD server processor new generation, code-named Naples. Recall that the x86-processor architecture Zen will have 32 cores and 64 threads, and will be released in early 2017.
It is reported that AMD is developing a processor, code-named Starship, which will be released in 2018 and will be based on a 7-nm technology standards. Apparently, AMD plans to skip the 10-nm process and go straight to 7 nm. This means that GlobalFoundries should be ready at the appointed time to run a 7-nm production line.
Starship, the flagship server processor will get 48 cores and 96 threads. Of course, AMD will release a 7-nm processors with fewer cores, and not only servers, but also desktops. It is reported that in the range will include processors with TDP level of 35 to 180 watts.
Of course, Starship - is so far only a draft, and the words about 2018, it is likely to mean the fourth quarter, but still, if AMD will be able to realize such an ambitious plan in time, it will serve as a powerful incentive for the company and the industry as a whole. In the meantime, we can only hope that in two years we will see a 7-nm server and desktop processors from AMD.
